Chapel Worship Services
Calvary students gather together each week in chapel services to praise our God. Teachers, students, pastors of Calvary, and other area Lutheran pastors lead this worship service. Bible-based, Christ-centered, age-appropriate worship is designed to meet student needs.
Christmas Programs
Calvary’s students annually present musical services during the Christmas season. These services are meant to prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of the Christ Child as students present the message.
Athletics
Calvary’s athletic program features soccer, basketball, and track for boys in grades 5-8 and volleyball, basketball, and track for girls in grades 5-8. Track is also offered to boys and girls in grade 4.
Calvary competes against other Lutheran schools in the Kansas City Lutheran Athletic League, and also competes against area private schools.
The purpose of the athletic program is to enhance the physical development of the children while also teaching skills, sportsmanship, healthy competitiveness, and Christian behavior. Students are able to build self-confidence, learn new and positive ways of relating to each other, and develop friendships with students from other Christian schools.
Cheerleading
Seventh and eighth grade girls have the opportunity to be involved with cheerleading. Besides developing physical skills and coordination, cheerleading teaches young women the importance of Christian attitude, cooperation, and unity of purpose, all of which reflect the Christian teaching in the classroom.
Presidential Physical Fitness Award
Students in grades 3-8 are tested each fall and spring in order to qualify for the Presidential Physical Fitness Award.
National Lutheran Schools Week
Calvary annually joins with over 2,200 Lutheran schools worldwide to share the blessing of Lutheran schools with others. This event falls in the first full week of March. Special events, concerts, servant projects, and collections are scheduled to celebrate God’s gift of Christian education through Lutheran Schools.
BOOK IT! Reading Program
Students in Kindergarten through grade six participate in the Pizza Hut BOOK IT! program. Students and classes are able to earn pizzas and discounts at Pizza Hut for reaching their reading goals each month. It is an exciting and tasty way to develop a life-long love for reading!
Exchange City
Calvary’s fifth grade class annually participates in Exchange City, sponsored by the Learning Exchange. This activity provides students with the chance to have a role in an imaginative city. Children are assigned “jobs” so they can learn about the interdependent nature of city life – commerce, government, and the social sector. Students may be the newspaper production manager, the mayor, or a storekeeper.
Christmas Field Trips
Each year, Calvary students attend a special event during the Christmas season. Over the past years, students have attended The Nutcracker, the Missouri Repertory Theatre’s A Christmas Carol, and various presentations at Theatre for Young America and the Coterie.
Young Audiences
Calvary students annually experience four performances by various dance, theatre, and musical performers sponsored by Kansas City Young Audiences. Some favorites from past years are Russian folk dancing and African drum and song.
8th Grade Plays
Calvary’s 8th graders annually present a play. This activity allows our 8th graders to experience the process of presenting a dramatic production.
Student Council
Students in grades 3-8 are chosen by the student body and confirmed by the faculty to serve on the Student Council. The Student Council sponsors the school field day, conducts various service events, and helps coordinate communication between students and other groups in the school.
Gathering of the Talents
Selected students works are submitted to Concordia University, Seward, Nebraska, for the annual Gathering of Talents competition. Works include art, poetry, short stories, drama, and our Choir and Handbell Choir.
Spelling Bee, Geography Bee & Math Competition
Students compete in an annual Spelling Bee and Geography Bee with the winner going on from Calvary to city, state and national bees until eliminated. Students also compete in Mathletics against students from other schools.
Grades 7 & 8 Spring Trip
Every other year, students in grades 7 & 8 travel to Washington, D. C. to tour the capital and other attractions in the Washington, D. C. area. On alternating years, the students take a weekend trip closer to home (for example, St. Louis). Students are able to participate in school-sponsored fundraisers to help defray the cost of the trips.
Parent Teacher League
The primary objective of Calvary Lutheran School’s Parent Teacher League is to foster a closer relationship between school and home. The PTL accomplishes this by sponsoring informative and timely monthly programs for parents (child care provided), offering fun activities for parents and students, and giving very generously of their time and talents to support activities within the school. Membership is open to all school families.
Science Fair
Students in grades 5-8 participate in the Kansas City Science Fair. Students choose between science experiments and science inventions as their project, which is then judged by a group of individuals, both within Calvary and outside of Calvary, who have backgrounds in the sciences. Winning students then participate in the Greater Kansas City Science Fair with students from around the city.
Win For K.C. Reading Challenge
Students in grades 3-6 may participate in the annual K. C. Reading Challenge. Students read 10 books, of which 3 are regarding women’s sports, 3 regarding men’s sports, and 4 other books of their choice. Students completing 10 books within the allotted time frame attend the MIAAConference Championships at Municipal Auditorium.
Accelerated Reader Program
Students also participate in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program. This program encourages students to read books at their individual reading level and then take computerized comprehension tests based on the books. Students earn points that they may “spend” on AR prizes at the AR Store. Points in grades 3-8 are included as one third of the student’s total Reading grade. Students also compete in an annual AR Challenge between Calvary and other schools nationwide using this program. Individual progress tracking is done to support students’ efforts. Learn more about the Accelerated Reader program.
Scouts
An after-school or evening Scouting program is offered for boys and girls.
Boys: Cub Scouts (Gr. 1-3); Webelos (Gr. 4-5); and Boy Scouts (Gr. 6-8).
Girls: Daisies (K); Brownies (Gr. 1-2); Juniors (Gr. 3-5); and Cadets (Gr. 6-8).
Other Clubs
Periodically, school staff or volunteers provide opportunities for students of various ages to learn new skills. These opportunities take on a “club” form and typically meet for a pre-determined number of sessions after school hours. Notice of upcoming activities is given in the school newsletter.
